The Lake Murray Yacht Racing Association (LMYRA) began in the 1970s as The Lake Murray Cruising Fleet by a group of sailors from all parts of the lake that enjoyed racing keelboats. In the 1980s it evolved into the Lake Murray Yacht Racing Association. LMYRA sponsors sailing events that are open to any mono-hull, ballasted, self- righting sailboat at least 20 feet long, having a cabin, operable engine and fuel. You need not be a member of any sailing or yacht club to race with LMYRA. Racing series are offered on Saturdays in the spring and fall, and individual special evening races are offered in the summer, including four pursuit races, an Overnight race, a Single-handed race, and a Couples race. Most of our race courses take advantage of the lake's islands as marks of the course, and a few buoy races are thrown in to the mix.
LMYRA is a non-profit organization that promotes the sport of sailboat racing. LMYRA offers learning opportunities such as clinics on race management, and it sponsors or supports events that raise funds for charitable organizations. LMYRA is a member of the regional organization SAYRA (South Atlantic Yacht Racing Assn), and of the national organization US Sailing.
